‘Wonder Man’ Showrunner Responds to Abrupt Cancellation; Andrew Guest Assures “It Is Not a Stunt”

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Andrew Guest, showrunner and co-creator of Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man, addressed the sudden cancellation of the series in a TikTok video, sharing key details behind the decision with viewers.
Addressing fans directly in the video, Guest stated: “I hear you, and I share your sentiments. I just want to clear a few things up: this is absolutely not a stunt or a marketing gimmick, and there is no feature film in development either. Scheduling conflicts were not the issue. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Destin Daniel Cretton, Sir Ben Kingsley, and I all loved making this show and were extremely eager to continue. Contracts were signed, and schedules were fully locked.”
He further added: “The writers’ room was set to convene this month, with production on Season 2 planned for early next year. Ultimately, an internal decision was made between Disney and Marvel that continuing the project no longer made sense for them—even though they held a different view just a few months ago. That is as much as I know.”
These comments follow an exclusive report by Variety in late July revealing that Disney+ had abruptly canceled the second season of Wonder Man. The move represents an unexpected shift in stance for Disney, given that the company had officially announced the Season 2 renewal back in March.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who won an Emmy Award for his performance as Simon Williams (Wonder Man), previously shared a statement on Instagram, writing: “Word got out that Wonder Man won’t be returning for Season 2. That’s the nature of acting and life; everything eventually finds its path.”
In addition to Abdul-Mateen and Ben Kingsley, the first season featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, and Olivia Thirlby. Destin Daniel Cretton (director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day) co-created the series alongside Andrew Guest and directed the pilot episode.
Wonder Man centers on Simon Williams, an aspiring Hollywood actor navigating the hurdles of the entertainment industry. After a chance encounter with Trevor Slattery (played by Ben Kingsley), he learns that renowned director Von Kovak plans to make a superhero film about “Wonder Man.” Positioned at opposite stages of their respective careers, the two actors compete for key roles in the production, offering a satirical, behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood.
